History


Doho University was preceded by Shinshu College, founded by the Buddhist teacher 住田智見 Sumida Chiken. (1868-1938) . Founded on the spirit of “Dōbō Seishin” (同朋精神) =spirit of fellowship; based on the teachings of Shinran Shonin (1173-1263), the university aims to be a place where people learn about “living together” and can achieve true growth.

1949 Tokai Senshu Training College opens
1950 Tokai Doho University opens, Department of Buddhism, Faculty of Buddhism opens
1959 Tokai Doho University changes name to Doho University
1961 Faculty of Buddhism changes name to Faculty of Letters, Department of Social Welfare opens
1964 Department of National Literature opens in Faculty of Letters
1977 Doho Gakuen Buddhist Culture Institute opens
(became Doho University Buddhist Culture Institute in 1992)
1985 Faculty of Social Welfare opens
1986 Special Course (Buddhism Studies) opens (Tokai Senshu Training College restructured)
1994 Faculty of Letters restructured, Department of Buddhism changes name to Department of Buddhist Culture, Department of National Literature changes name to Department of Japanese Literature, Life Education Center Opens
1995 Health Information Center opens in Faculty of Social Welfare
2003 Buddhist Cultural Studies course opens in Graduate School Department of Literary Research
2004 Graduate School Department of Human Welfare Research opens
2005 Faculty of Letters restructured, Department of Japanese Literature changes name to Department of Human Culture, doctorate program opens in Graduate School Department of Literary Research
2009 Faculty of Letters restructured into Department of Buddhism and Department of Humanities, Department of Social Welfare restructured in Social Welfare Studies and Child Science Studies courses
2015 Clinical Psychology Studies courses open in Graduate School Department of Human and Social Welfare Research
2020 Graduate School Department of Human Studies Research established, research departments integrated
2024 Psychology Studies courses open in Department of Social Welfare
